On Having Style Icons

My capsule wardrobe experiment has been fun, challenging, and new to me in many ways. I’ve always enjoyed shopping and been at least mildly interested in developing my own personal style, but I’m certainly not fashion obsessed. I like to look put together and feel comfortable, but rarely get caught up in fads or trends. For me, the purpose of creating a capsule wardrobe was not to focus more attention on my clothing or to get too caught up in hunting down the perfect new purchase. Rather, I wanted to declutter my closet, streamline the process of picking each day’s outfit, and focus more on finding pieces that I truly love.

As a part of this process, I decided to choose a couple of style icons. I searched for images and thought back on celebrities whose outfits I often admire. I settled fairly quickly on Reese Witherspoon and Lauren Conrad. Both of these women tend to wear understated and comfortable pieces that are at once feminine, classic, and a bit preppy – just my style. I started a Pinterest board devoted solely to images of their outfits, and use this as a source to gain inspiration and cultivate ideas for my own closet. This has been a great way to discover pieces to add to my wardrobe and to reimagine new ways to combine the items I already own. Here are just a few images that I’ve been loving recently. I’m curious: do you have any style icons? Which celebrities do you look to for fashion inspiration?
